Skirting across the edge of a glacier to avoid travelling in hundreds of miles muddy run-off from the glacier itself seemed like a great idea at the time, but it is not without its own difficulties.

Robert crossing the glacier carefully. There's no snow bridges this late in the season, but that is not to say that all ice is good ice. Black and brown ash also blankets the glacier in small pockets wherever it can accumulate. In the background, really shitty weather is rolling in.

Maaike, Kaisa and I went for an evening hike back up to one of the mountain passes we'd seen on our way down to camp for a better view of the Fögrujöll and Håskanef area.

Next day is some sweet mixed terrain, as the general trail Robert had used from the previous years had eroded into the lake. We found it much easier to chuck the boots and walk the water.
Walking through the water in this perfectly still landscape was so refreshing, and a definite welcome change to the dust and harsh wind and rain from most of the trip.
It's the end of July, but there's still some snow left along the lake's edge. This was probably packed snow from an avalanche, earlier in the season. Regardless, it's like a highway for us now.

Moss thrives in Iceland and paints much of the country green in the summer time. Grettir and the surrounding area is no exception.
Welcome to Eldgjá, the largest volcanic canyon in the world.
A return trip to Iceland will be in order.
